SmartThings Energy, the app that monitors energy consumption

Saving energy is an increasingly important issue, whether it is due to the control of consumer spending, sustainability or care for the environment. With this in mind, Samsung has made available to users the SmartThings app with the Energy feature, which allows users to explore ways to save electricity usage and help reduce carbon footprint.

The feature was created to give users transparency regarding energy consumption, with easy, real-time monitoring options for some connected devices1 in Samsung's SmartThings ecosystem, such as Samsung WindFree air conditioner models.

In WindFree air conditioners, for example, SmartThings Energy adds to other benefits focused on efficiency and economy such as Digital Inverter compressor technology that maintains the temperature of spaces without the need to turn the device off and on several times, with less noise and saving up to 77% energy¹ compared to conventional models.

"Thanks to the development of solutions such as SmartThings Energy, today the user can have greater control of energy consumption, favoring the economy and caring for the planet," highlights Camila Segura, Marketing and Communications Manager for Home Appliances at Samsung Colombia.

Development of SmartThings Energy

The idea for this feature arose at the Samsung Design Latin America in São Paulo (SDLA) in 2017, after the launch of the first WindFree in Brazil, which allowed the device's energy consumption to be measured. Over the years, Samsung Korea created the feature and the concept was refined in a partnership between Samsung Design Latin America and the Samsung Research and Development Center, in order to localize the resource for the Brazilian electricity scenario.

The concept was born from the desire to provide users with information about the energy consumption of electronic products. SmartThings Energy can deliver the result of this calculation in real time and in a practical way as soon as the user includes their product in the SmartThings ecosystem.

Samsung first rolled out the feature at the Samsung Head Quarters in Korea and later made its debut in the US, UK and India. The good results and public acceptance represented the green light for Brazil to be the fifth country to develop its own improved version. In Latin America, SmartThings Energy will be available soon for Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Panama.

How SmartThings Energy works

SmartThings Energy allows a detailed view of energy consumption, create alerts and show comparisons to understand how much the connected device consumes at the end of the month.

“SmartThings Energy empowers the consumer to understand how their products work and how much energy they consume in order to use them intelligently and obtain the best value for money. This function provides users with a complete and real-time view of each piece of equipment”, adds Camila Segura.

Using it is simple:

· The first step is to check if the SmartThings app is up to date. Otherwise, download the update from the smartphone's app store.

· Open the SmartThings app and tap the Life button.

· Inform your postal code so that the application identifies your energy distributor.

· If you have a compatible appliance, it will appear within the 'Energy' function.
